2021 Moon Tours Adventure – Madigan Line, Simpson Desert
Touring the Simpson Desert, the adventure of a lifetime.
The Simpson Desert, one of the most remote areas on earth. A bucket list destination and experience for many off road campers.
Moon Tours, owned and operated by Trent and Stephanie Moon, are keen and experienced travellers, and have been giving their clients unforgettable experiences for over 10 years.
The pair both have adventure running through their veins. Trent’s parents, Ron and Viv Moon, are among the most well-travelled people in Australia and some of the most experienced 4WD over-landers in the world. When it comes to remote travel they have quite literally written the book on it and those remote area 4WD guide books have been in print for almost 40 years and still are to this day.

With the experience you want to get across the desert and a lifetime in the bush. Trent has been fortunate to spend much of his life in outback Australia with over a dozen crossings of the Simpson. Well-travelled in the Victorian High Country, Cape York, the Canning Stock Route and the Kimberley in the foot steps of his parents Ron & Viv Moon.
Things really kick off at Mt Dare on the western fringe of the desert, passing Old Andado, the ancient Acacia forest of Mac Clark Reserve and gibber plains before the thousand odd dunes before finally ending at the famous Big Red. Named by our friend Denis Bartell in 1980 after one of his many extraordinary desert crossings, check out his book Desert Walker.
The Madigan Line should not be taken lightly, the track can take it’s toll with vehicles fully loaded working hard to get over the dunes and suspension being pushed to the limit taking on the mogul sections of the track but no problem for a good set up. Preparation is the key. See our VEHICLE CHECK LIST section for vehicle preparation, fuel usage and safety information.
Tackling the Madigan from West to East means the dune gradient on approach is a lot less acute and lot less punishing on your vehicle and trailer. For the most part you’ll be cruising and rolling over the dunes.
