Families take extended breaks from city living and turn their kids into ‘road scholars’

There was a time when Ryan Murphy worked 100 hours a week on large-scale construction sites, leaving home at 4:00am, and getting back so late he barely saw his wife and young kids.

He frequently missed important milestones, like his son’s first day at kindergarten.

Even though he was earning well, and his wife Amy picked up part-time work after their first two kids were born, they never seemed to be getting ahead with their mortgage.

“I always felt that we were treading water,” Mr Murphy said.

That was before they packed up and hit the road with their boys on a three-year adventure.
